Most people choose a painter based on who gave them the lowest bid. That's understandable — but it's also how most bad painting experiences happen. Price is one factor. These five questions are how you figure out whether the person you're hiring is actually going to do the job right.

1. Are You Licensed and Insured?

This isn't just a formality. A licensed contractor has met state requirements and has skin in the game professionally. Insurance protects you if something goes wrong — if a painter damages a surface, breaks something, or gets hurt on your property, you don't want to be liable.

Ask for proof. Any legitimate contractor will have it ready and won't hesitate to provide it. If someone is vague or says “yeah, I'm covered” without being able to show documentation, that's a red flag.

2. What Does Your Prep Process Look Like?

This is where most quality differences actually show up. Prep — cleaning, sanding, caulking, patching, priming — is what determines how long a paint job lasts and how good it looks.

A contractor who talks mostly about color and finish without mentioning prep in detail is likely skipping steps. A good answer describes what they do to the surface before they open the first can of paint.

3. What Products Do You Use?

Paint quality matters. There's a real difference between a $25 gallon and a $65 gallon — in coverage, durability, and how it looks at the end. Ask what brand and line they use and why.

A contractor who buys whatever's cheapest at the hardware store and doesn't have a clear answer about product choice is cutting corners. We use Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore products specifically because they perform reliably over time in midwest climates.

4. Can You Show Me Examples of Recent Work?

Photos are easy to curate — a contractor can show you their best jobs and hide their worst. But it's still worth asking. How they respond tells you something.

Better yet, ask if they have any recent references in your area you can contact directly. Someone who has consistently done good work will have no hesitation giving you names and numbers.

5. What's Your Timeline and How Do You Handle Concerns?

You want to know when they can start, how long the job will take, and what happens if you're not satisfied with something when they're done. A contractor who can answer all three clearly — and who stands behind their work with a specific guarantee — is telling you something important about how they operate.

Vague answers here usually mean vague accountability later.

One More Thing

Gut check the communication. From the first call to the estimate visit, are they responsive and clear? Contractors who are hard to reach before the job are harder to reach when there's an issue after it.
